Ashton on Mersey School was designated a Maths Hub in 2014, one of only 35 nationally. There are four hubs in the North West with the remit to improve teaching and learning in Mathematics across the North West. Our hub, North West 2 has been working with our strategic partners on a series of both national collaborative and local projects over the last 2 years. There has been a clear focus in the primary sector to develop ‘Teaching for Mastery’ with projects including appointing and training four ‘specialists’ and looking at practice from the Far East; Chinese pedagogy in an exchange with teachers from Shanghai and developing the use of a Singapore text book. The focus in the Secondary phase has been about supporting staff with the demands of the new GCSE and developing mathematical reasoning. Our post 16 work group has looked at ways of engaging pupils in Mathematics to encourage a greater uptake at A Level. Mathematics staff at Ashton on Mersey and Sale Grammar have collaborated on a series of projects this year, that will have significant impact on the Mathematics workforce across the North West. Programmes include Primary Mathematics Specialist ITT route, developing Mathematics pedagogy and improving classroom practice, supporting new leaders in Mathematics, and retraining non specialist teachers strengthening and increasing their knowledge.
